Progress Report - Ramita

Progress Report:
We had to finish off our storyboards which became stressing for all of us in the group. We didn't think that we had to include so many detail and write down every camera movement. Also we had spent so many lessons and outside of lesson time to complete the storyboard to at least so we finally finished and now are getting ready to film.

Action Plan:

  • We need to finalise the actors and take pictures of them
  • Decide where we will be filming
  • Make a schedule, when everyone is free and start filming
  • Get costumes
  • Get some practice shots of what we ideally would like to be in our trailer

Final Storyboards

Progress Report -Rabia (:

Last week we had focused all our attention on our storyboarding, it started to becoming irritating and we had added many extra scenes in, we had completed it and got to get our camera, which was great after all the drawing and in depth focus on camera movement and extra

Week Starting 31st January
action plan :

  • We are going to focus on character profiles
  • Costumes
  • ideal looks for each character
  • Settings
  • When and Where we will be filming.
By focusing on a lot this week will give us a comfortable next couple of weeks because its all written down, which will be our skeleton of our filming :) x

Progress Report - Ramita

We all decided to met up in the LRA and work on our storyboards however, we couldn't be creative enough and decide what should happen in the middle of the trailer. We then decided to split the scenes and then put them together. However when we in lesson Mr Bush gave us the feedback which then we decided to start our storyboards again.

As we started our storyboard straight into disequilibrium, we looked at other horror trailers and decided that our trailer should start of equlilbruim, rather then an disequilibrium. We also had to add additional shots because an average horror trailer consists of 120. Also we had to add more specific detail on what type of shots we were going to use and also what kind of sound will be played throughout the trailer.

Also we decided that we were going to name our trailer Enigma because other successful trailer such as Saw are one worded trailers. Also wrote out some of the dialogue that is going to be in our trailer

20/01/11: Review on Storyboards

As a group, we met up once alongside the work in class, and were working on developing our storyboard and the sequences, type of shot and edit that would be involved in each part. To begin with, we found it quite hard to organise yet be spontaneous in the way we would order each scene. More and more and ideas were generated as we went along such as, burning paper on writing scenes, zooming into eye effect and an integrated sub story as the main trailer goes along.

Feedback from Mr Bush involved us being more disequilibrium in the middle of our trailer and looking again at how psychological horrors build suspense from start to finish. This involved us implementing a slow, calm scene where everything is innocent.

Next was the detail in type of shots in specific scenes, for example not enough shots to convey the whole message, rather the skeleton of the trailer.

Lastly, we has troubles deciding on our final name, it was between Enigma, Riddle and The Rdiddler. After analysing similar film names like, Orphan and Saw we concluded that Riddle would be effective to what the film is about and the fact that it is one word.

Overall, it was successful storyboarding, just need to complete a full detailed storyboard ready for filming!

Progress Report -Rabia (:

23rd January

concentrated on the story board as an individual, as Naomi, Ramita and I split the story board in to three sections. This helped us include our own ideas to each section and in the lessons we are able to discuss and change certain areas.

story board-

our first story board plan

Progress Report -Rabia (:

16th January - 21st January

We have been focusing on our story board of our trailer. We have asked Mr Unugur and Mr Bush for feed back.
We have added more ideas to our original plan however we got stuck on the climax and how we are going to show it.

By asking Mr Bush he said: we should add more description to our story boards, for example the type of shot and the movement and how we need to add a beginning, equilibrium, to build up the storyline, not to just go in to the disequilibrium.

Mr Unugur helped us plan our title, he said suggested that our genre, physcholoigical Horror movies tend to have only one worded titles. Therefore we had decided for Enigma.

Now knowing what the title will be, we will be able to construct a symbol that the killer would put on the letters and people she has killed.

Progress Report - Naomi :)

Christmas Week:
When I, Rabia and Ramita met in the holidays to discuss the narrative of our horror trailer, we went through several plots and tried arranging them by using ideas from each also thinking about the codes and conventions.  It was quite difficult to get a complete idea that involved a good build up and climax. We all had great ideas for the beginning and end other trailer but we needed to decide how this developed into a really ‘horrific’ psychological climax.

After a lot of discussion, Rabia came up with the idea of a letter where then me and Ramita added to the ‘riddle’ element which is then sent in a form of a letter.  From there we developed other narrative revolving around why this young girl decided to kill people which aided the psychological convention in the movie.
In my opinion, I think that from my own evaluation of myself, I contributed various ideas whereby as a group we could bring together into a full and clear narrative.

4th Jan:]
We all met in class in school ready with our presentation with lots of information on codes and conventions, mise en scene, film language and audience for our film trailer. We modified our presentation by making it more interactive with more video, les writing and more pictures so we could attract our key audience in front of us. We also organised who is presenting each slide with a little rehearsal.

Evaluation of Presentation:
I think that all three of us presented very well in the way we addressed to our target audience in front of us. We all knew what we were saying and presented in a confident way without reading off the board. Clear points such as narrative and research were clearly and constructively spoken about to ensure that our audience understood our main aim.

Personally, my own presentation skills by interacting and looking at the audience was good however I think that I’ll create key points for me to follow to keep it short and informative.

Overall, we each contributed equally through the planning and presentation which enabled us to have a complete structured and detailed narrative that is doable.

Progress Report - Ramita

During the Christmas holiday period, me, Rabia and Naomi decided to meet up. When we met up we decided on our plot and possible titles for our film trailer. We also decided how we were going to pitch our film trailers and went on to research different areas that we would need to cover in our pitch.
Firstly, we all had different ideas on what we would like to be in our trailer, we put them together in order. However we faced difficulty when we had to decide what the climax will be in the film. Also we wanted to avoid filming the trailer at school so we had to slightly change our ideas.

My participation in the group was equally the same as Rabia and Naomi. We all had different ideas and brought them together into a story. We used the codes and conventions of horror and decided what type of shots, characters, music will be needed.

The Next Step (=

The Others is a Psychological horror rated 15. As you can see there is no sign of gore or violence, the different angles and lighting creates the tension and what you cannot see is what frightens the audience and keeps them alert because the audience are eager to see what it is that is there, or not there.

The Unborn shows different aspects to what you usually would see, they do show what and who is doing things to her but we are not sure why it is happening and as the trailer goes on you see different angles being used and the lighting. One main feature is when they want the audience to engage to a specific object or person they put the key light to that object or person, for the audience to put there full focus on that. Even though the audience is able to see what is doing on. They are left with so many questions. The music is also what builds up the tension and suspense throughout the trailer.

The Ring uses also uses music to build tension, they use a sound bridge for the movie trailer to flow, as the trailer goes on you can see long shots and close ups used often because they want the audience to feel as if they are the actor or they are in the scene. At the end the tempo speeds up to show the events happen often and quickly to show come scenes of what happens, leaving the audience wanting more.

Here are some examples of 15 certificate movies that are Horror, manly psychological horror because there are not using extreme violence and other uses of horror, they are leaving the music and lighting to frighten the audience. The also use this aspects because some of the story lines are unrealistic but it gives a feel of it actually happening.

Evaluation on Powerpoint- Ramita

In my opinion, our pitch on our film trailer idea went really well. This is the first time I am working with Rabia and Naomi and I worked well with both of them. I personally think that our pitch idea went well for many reasons. The main reason why our pitch went well was because we were prepared as we didn't use notes and did not read straight of the board. We also kept eye contact with rest of the class and made the audience interact with our pitch as we asked them to vote for title would be suitable for our trailer idea.

I think that I interacted well with the audience well as I used examples and hand gestures to explain my point.
However I think that we could have researched more into 15 certificate films by evaluating codes and conventions of a 15 film trailer as our film trailer is going to be a 15 certificate.
Also personally I could have improved on being more confident, as I was nervous I kept jumbling my sentences up and starting all over again.

Evaluation on Powerpoint- Rabia

Personally, our pitch towards the class was presented well because we all knew what slide we was going to talk about and we was confident to present. Our powerpoint included  information to show the class, as well as Mr Bush that we understand different aspects of the 'Horror' genre and, our understanding of the different sub-genres. We did not use irrelevant information.

We could of improved our powerpoint by if we spoke about movies that were in the 15 certificate and analysed  those to and explained how they appealed to the same targeted audience as ours.

Something I believe I done well during the presentation, is that I was confident in speaking to the class, and I did not read off the slides to show that I have full knowledge of what i was saying and shown my participation in the powerpoint.

One thing I could of improved on is when I am trying to explain something, make it clear.

Progress Report -Rabia (:

During the Christmas holidays we had decided on different solutions for the plot.
We met up and put our ideas together. The one main aspect that was difficult to conclude was what the climax was and why it was, because without a climax it did not allow our ideas and thoughts flow.

My participation in this was the same as Naomi and Ramita, deciding on different story lines, however my idea of including a 'letter' to help the story line build up tension for the audience. Ramita and Naomi helped elaborate on having a riddle on this letter. Which from there we was able to plan different ideas of when what scene will happen ( a brief idea), which lead to ideas of our title.

Guidelines for 15-18 Movies - by Ramita

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) is the organisation in charge of awarding films in the UK their respective certificates . We have decided that our film trailer should be classed as a 15. I have researched the boundaries in which we have to keep within while filming.

Suitable only for 15 years and over
No one younger than 15 may see a ‘15’ film in a cinema. No one younger than 15 may rent or buy a ‘15’ rated video work.

Discrimination

The work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour.

Drugs

Drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse. The misuse of easily accessible and highly dangerous substances (for example, aerosols or solvents) is unlikely to be acceptable.

Horror

Strong threat and menace are permitted unless sadistic or sexualised.

Imitable behaviour

Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be copied. Easily accessible weapons should not be glamorised.

Language

There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, ‘fuck’). The strongest  terms (for example, ‘cunt’) may be acceptable if justified by the context. Aggressive or repeated use of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable.

Nudity

Nudity may be allowed in a sexual context but without strong detail. There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context.

Sex

Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but the strongest references are unlikely  to be acceptable unless justified by context. Works whose primary purpose is sexual arousal or stimulation are unlikely to be acceptable.

Theme

No theme is prohibited, provided the treatment is appropriate for 15 year olds.

Violence

Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. Strong sadistic or sexualised violence is also unlikely to be acceptable. There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence but any portrayal of sexual violence must be discreet and have a strong contextual justification.
To keep within our boundaries and not to fall into the 18 movie rating I have researched the boundaries.

Suitable only for adults
No-one younger than 18 may see an ‘18’ film in a cinema.

No-one younger than 18 may rent or buy an ‘18’ rated video.
In line with the consistent findings of the BBFC’s public consultations and The Human Rights Act 1998, at ‘18’ the BBFC’s guideline concerns will not normally override the principle that adults should be free to choose their own entertainment. Exceptions are most likely in the following areas:

-where the material is in breach of the criminal law, or has been created through the commission of a criminal offence
-where material or treatment appears to the BBFC to risk harm to individuals or, through their behaviour, to society – for example, any detailed portrayal of violent or dangerous acts, or of illegal drug use, which may cause harm to public health or morals. This may include portrayals of sexual or sexualised violence which might, for example, eroticise or endorse sexual assault
-where there are more explicit images of sexual activity which cannot be justified by context. Such images may be appropriate in ‘R18’ works, and in ‘sex works’ (see below) would normally be confined to that category.
In the case of video works (including video games), which may be more accessible to younger viewers, intervention may be more frequent than for cinema films.

Sex education at ‘18’

Where sex material genuinely seeks to inform and educate in matters such as human sexuality, safer sex and health, explicit images of sexual activity may be permitted.

Sex works at ‘18’

Sex works are works whose primary purpose is sexual arousal or stimulation. Sex works containing only material which may be simulated are generally passed ‘18’. Sex works containing clear images of real sex, strong fetish material, sexually explicit animated images, or other very strong sexual images will be confined to the ‘R18’ category. Material which is unacceptable in a sex work at ‘R18’ is also unacceptable in a sex work at ‘18’.

Planning

Here are pictures of our planning of our story line and what will be included in our powerpoint.
the pictures are from each, Ramita, Naomi and my book/paper.
